A Fresh Start

18.2.12

We got some unwelcome news last month. Our landlord is selling our house and won’t renew our lease. I absolutely despise moving. I’ll miss our fig tree, giant backyard, and garden. Andi will miss our house too.

But good riddance to our atrocious kitchen. The owner was a stereotypical single bro who never cooked. He bought a giant fridge but never bothered to fix all the burners on the stove. There’s also no dishwasher.

In our new house we’ll have a dishwasher and plenty of counter space (if I can just accept the offensive faux granite counter tops). And maybe I’ll be able to display my collection of legume jars on the counter for once!

Shauna’s recent post on Gluten Free Girl got me thinking of this moving hassle as an opportunity. It will be a fresh start from this.

Feels kind of psycho putting my clutter out there for all to see, but this isn’t even the worst of it. I refrained from posting the picture of our flatware drawer. And what is up with the hand grenade cup from college times on Bourbon Street circa 2002?

I’ve checked the internet for some inspiration, and this is what I’ve found so far:

My tips for organizing a kitchen include blasting all the old kitchen my Grampa built in 1955 and replacing it :-) But- despite all the fancy shelving units and soft-close drawers, I think ultimately we need to rethink what we really NEED! What did we do bofore the apple peeler/corer/slicer?!

I would be mortified to show you some of my kitchen cabinets right now. We have played around with various ideas…pots in pans in drawers…pots and pans in the lazy susan…pots and pans in the cabinets…nothing has proven to be a good solution. I think, at long last, I have convinced my more-stubborn-than-I-am husband to consider either a freestanding shelf or one of those drill into the wall/ceiling racks where you can HANG these things. We have a decent sized kitchen (for nyc standards) but we have a lot of kitchen STUFF and appliances. Can’t wait to check out your links on organization!

Moving is a great time to really pare down and ask the “do I really need this” question, about a gazillion times in my case. Bummer that you have to be uprooted…I hope you’ll enjoy the “starting over” part of moving in. That dishwasher should make the faux-granite a little more tolerable. ;)

I think you’re right that we just need to pare down. Unfortunately I’ve just been throwing everything into boxes and moving it. Maybe later this month there will be time for a real spring cleaning. I love getting rid of stuff!

You are totally speaking to my heart here. I always feel this way when I move. (Almost always.) Sad to leave my familiar space, but eager to let loose my OCD dreams of a perfectly organized home. The first two months or so I revel in the bliss of having everything in its right place… then I usually muck it up. Best of luck in your new space! I hope you love it.
